A Hollywood Conscience
"It's June in Scotland, Ohio, Middle America. It's high school graduation for Ryder McHugh and Brik Peter. Encouraged by their teacher, Englishman Jeremy Page, the boys appear to great acclaim to great acclaim as Rosencrantz ad Guilderstern in the school play. In the audience is Jeremy's ex-lover, Hollywood agent Andy Horowitz. Brit and Ryder, best friends and sons of best friends, come from a small farming community which corporate agriculture is making redundant. Both boys know there is no future on the land. Ryder is more ambitious and adventurous but has decided not to attend college; Brik is gentler, more sensitive and set to study engineering. And then an offer arrives from Andy Horowitz for Brik to go to Hollywood to screen test for a television series. Brik accepts, with the condition Ryder accompany him. Jeremy, too, is going to California to take up a teaching post. Brik's father charges Jeremy with keeping an eye on the boys. By July Ryder and Brik are on their way west. One boy is straight, the other gay; the gay one know, the straight one doesn't. By October it is Ryder who is the new face in Hollywood, not Brik. However, Brik is an equal celebrity - though for rather different reasons.
