Our take

Cas survives Analon by being faster and colder than everyone around him, with just two goals left: protect his sister and avenge his murdered parents. An invitation to a deadly rebel initiation should be simple, except Darion keeps showing up everywhere Cas turns, charming and clearly hiding something enormous. The romance here runs explicit, matching a mature rating that doesn't fade to black once things heat up between them. Reviewers keep praising the worldbuilding and calling the central pairing genuinely tender underneath all the violence.

Content notes: this book includes on-page violence, murder, referenced child abuse, and the loss of both parents in the backstory, so go in aware of the intensity.
