Our take

The third and final book of a YA fantasy trilogy, so not the place to start if you haven't read the first two. It closes out a high fantasy series featuring gay and bisexual leads across its ensemble cast. Trilogy-ending books are hard to stick the landing on, and the early read on this one is that the multiple narrators come together cleanly instead of feeling scattered. Go in expecting answers, not a fresh jumping-on point.

This is high fantasy through and through, with the kind of political stakes, elemental magic, and found-royalty plotlines the genre's fans expect from a trilogy capstone. Being the third book, it assumes you already know the world's rules and its cast's history, so it moves fast rather than re-explaining. Multiple narrators split the story, which means the pacing jumps between different characters' fights rather than following one central hero straight through to the end.
