A novel about a poor boy growing up in 1970s Manila. He is Gringo whose father beats his mother and dreams of emigrating to the United States. Gringo's older brother, Pipo, enjoys dressing like a woman and one day is raped by the owner of a beauty parlor down the street. For that the owner is murdered. Eventually, the father obtains a visa and the family emigrate.
